Dan McDermott fired a super 25-yard winner to edge this tough encounter in Suffolk. Surprising thing was Dan started this game as centre back.
Chatteris had not been in league action for two weeks and with some changes in personnel and positions Chatteris started quite brightly. Much of the whole game was end to end and with long ball via both keepers. However occasionally Chatteris played their passing game, which seemed to baffle their opponents. Mildenhall’s main threat came from the long ball over the top with tall and physically quick, but our defence held firm with Joe Baker sweeping every up that came to him.
Ryan White deputising for the injured Jamie (get well soon Jamie) did very well coming off his line and had one save to make all game on 24 mins when a hard high shot was parried over the bar safely. Chatteris first half chances seemed to fizzle out right at the last moment. However a cracking shot by Frankie Ransome was just wide with keeper beaten. Gary Jackson also shot just wide despite not quite getting hold of it.
HT 0-0
A couple of position changes at half time and Chatteris seemed to be galvanised. The ever improving and influential Alex Macrae had a great run and cross with eluded the on rushing Tyler. Gary Jackson got around the outside and crossed well a few times alas the final touch was not quite there.
On 51mins we got our breakthrough. Alex half won the ball and Tyler Crane chased the defender hard and forced him into a poor and weak clearance for Dan McDermott to run onto the ball and hit a cracking first time shot into the top corner for 1-0. 3 mins later the returning Josh put a high cross-come shot which to be fair the Mildenhall keeper did very well to get across to and keep out. Again their keeper did very well low down to his right when he pushed around the post for a corner when Macrae fired a low first time shot.
The last 5 mins were a little tense as Mldenhall pushed more forward and kept their long ball game, both Sam Merryweather and the MOTM Joe Baker dealt with everything. They were well assisted by Pat Ford and Jordon Martin. Jordon providing the tackle of the game when he flew into a 40-60 tackle, against a guy 2 foot taller and probably a stone heavier and came away with the ball.
This was a good battling, although sometimes-ugly performance Chatteris needed to keep up the pressure on Eaton Socon and Comberton. That’s now two wins and a draw from our first three games. Well-done boys… |
