Chatteris kept up their 100% record with a workmanlike performance against a Newmarket side who gave us an early scare.
After the first two games of the season when Chatteris had started brightly, this was the total opposite. It was if the boys had spent a 'night on the tiles', the workrate was poor, the passing was poor, the ball control was poor, the movement was poor, I could go on and on. In fact during this period, which lasted for about 25 minutes, they were fortunate to be only one goal down. This came in the 6th minute when Chatteris failed to clear a corner properly and went behind from a shot from the edge of the box which gave keeper Liam Birch no chance. Even this didn't seem to wake the boys and it took them a good 15 minutes to string any sort of passing move together. During this period, Liam Birch took a nasty knock and had to be replaced in goal by Moises Pereira. It took until the 32nd minute before Chatteris got on the scoresheet when a good through ball from Henry Shepherd found Damon Beckett who managed to lob the keeper from just outside the penalty area. Just three minutes later Chatteris took the lead, a good passing move down the right between Josh Dodman and Ben Perry resulted in a cross from Jack Rudkin which was headed home from close range by Damon Beckett. HT 2-1
The 2nd half was a completely different story, Chatteris started to play as we know they can. Three minutes into the half Damon should have got his hat-trick but shot just wide, however he didn't have to wait long getting his third following a good run by Josh Dodman, Damon knicking the ball off Josh's toe just as he was about to shoot. Damon notched his 4th after 55 minutes when he was first to react to a long ball over the Newmarket defence. By now it was one way traffic, and Chatteris 5th was scored by Henry Shepherd when the Newmarket defence tried to play offside but Henry held onto the ball, burst through and neatly rounded the keeper. The visitors final goal came 4 minutes before the final whistle being well taken by Jack Rudkin. FT 6-1
