HOME TO ST IVES 24/01/10

Today saw the B’s take on St Ives who were bottom of our league in Division C. They have been unfortunate so far this season without a result, and we will no doubt see them in our division next season. Anyway the lads needed a result following on from last weeks close affair away to Teversham in the cup. It was great to see them in very positive spirits and up for the game. The first half saw the lads come out of the traps the fastest and get straight in to St Ives. The pitch was a bit tacky so they had to work hard to get a solid passing game going. There were some early half chances but their keeper had it covered. However when Liam Waters took a long range shot which rattled off the cross bar, I kind of new that this could be our day. It took the boys just 7 mins to unlock the St Ives defence. It came from a well worked ball from the right that saw some good link up play between Danny Lynch, Kundai Chizah and finally setting up Ben Chapman for a nice shot on goal. Unfortunately their keeper was alert to the danger and got himself in a position to parry away……….., straight in to the path of the waiting Charlie Sibthorp. Great goal after some great team build up play. The team continued to get amongst their opposite numbers and they looked like they would score another before the first half was out. On 28 mins Charlie Sibthorp pounced again after a defensive error in the St Ives ranks. HT 2-0 to CTYFC.

The second half was much the same although St Ives did make it harder for us this half. The pitch was getting heavy and there were some great individual battles going on especially at the back with Mitchell Coulson & George Chrysanthou who were both working hard clearing the ball and not flapping. Our skipper George Barker again kept a reasonably cool head and controlled the defensive line without too many alarm bells going off. Billy Baker who made some impressive saves last week wasn’t really tested but still kept on his guard to keep a clean sheet for the team. The final score should have been about six or seven nil as there were some mad goal line clearance’s in front of the St Ives defence, but to their credit their keeper kept them in the game and if they had only just converted a couple of their chances we might have had to share the points. FT 2-0 to CTYFC.

Man of the Match went to Charlie Sibthorp for showing us all that he is a naturally left sided striker who if given the chance can score. Well done mate and get scoring more often. The whole team including subs made a massive impact in some way or another. This is because of last weeks game, where you thought you would get thrashed and didn’t which gave you all confidence, and from working harder at training and listening to what was being said, for example, drifting and setting your conditions for how you want to play and not vice versa. A better performance and I expect you all to maintain this when we host Littleport next Sunday. Well done B’s you looked good out there today and I was very happy to see you all smile after and earn yourselves 3 points. Thanks to Rob Unsworth and Dave Chapman for controlling the game and doing they're bit for the team. Also to the supporters/family/friends and parents that turned out and got behind the boys. See you at training on Friday.
