Cherry Hinton proved to the boys today that anything can happen in a division A match. Both teams had rare chances throughout the match, but Chatteris was not linking well upfront and players were left isolated. It took a controversial referee's decision to decide the match in Cherry Hinton's favour in the very last minute of the match.
CH started strongly and early on Matthijs had to make a one-on-one save to keep a CH attacker from scoring and at the other side Asa had a few chances to shoot from the side, but they flew over the top. Play was flowing both ways and CH tried to break through a few times, but was held by the defence. Chatteris then had a very strong chance at scoring and had already passed the keeper, but it was saved off the line by one of his defenders. It was time for CH again to put the pressure on the Chatteris goal with a corner, but despite numerous attempts it was evt. worked away again by the Chatteris defence. The Chatteris boys played decent football, but there were too many gaps left on the field, leaving players without support. This was partly due to the size of the pitch, but that couldn't explain all the intercepted passes. It was still 0-0 at half-time.
In the second half, after a good talk in the dressing room no doubt, the Chatteris boys put more pressure on CH, but they weren't getting anywhere and it was in fact CH that hit the crossbar with a powerful shot. The rebound shot had to be saved by Matthijs with an instinctive sticking out of his hand. The resulting corner was evt.worked away. At the other side Chatteris then nearly repeated last week's feat of scoring with a header following a corner from Asa, but the keeper jumped up and pushed it away before any head could get to the ball. Chatteris was tiring by now and that gave the CH attack the chance to break through and head towards the goal again and they might have scored, but for a last minute, desperate lunging tackle by Ivo, which made the attacker shoot wide. The boys in midfield kept trying to start an attack, but the players upfront were too isolated from each other and there was a lack of teamwork, so nothing happened on the scoring front. The spectators had more or less accepted that it was going to be a 0-0 draw when CH started a final attack, with the attacker outrunning one of the defenders, leaving Matthijs in a one-on-one situation. He had come out and dived for the ball with arms outstretched and managed to grab hold of it with both hands. The attacker however kicked him on the arm and kicked the ball out of his hands and went on to score in the now open goal. Despite Matthijs' protests and those of all 4 of the defenders who had seen what happened, the referee allowed the goal to stand and whistled for the end straight after the restart. This result left the boys with a sour taste in their mouth, as they knew that they hadn't deserved to win, but a draw would have been the right result for both teams. |
