Goal in extra time gets U13A in final of league cup
By Harriet.

Third time lucky: after 2 postponements due to bad weather, Godmanchester and Chatteris finally met to play the semi-final of the league cup.

Both teams went for it from the start, but it turned out to be one of those days where barely anything gets into the net, despite numerous chances on both sides. Chatteris appeared to dominate a bit at first, with Ivo's head and Jake K's foot just missing an early chance from a corner and Chatteris applying pressure on the Godmanchester defence, but they held the boys very well. It was really a bit against the run of play when a Godmanchester break saw their attacker loop the ball high over an outcoming Matthijs into the far corner of the net to give them the lead. Chatteris was a bit shocked by this unexpected turn of events and needed a bit of time to rally again, whereas it gave Godmanchester confidence to push forward. They unleashed another strong shot at Matthijs which luckily he managed to palm over the bar and out of play. The boys kept trying too at the other end, but to no avail. One of the Godmanchester defenders got a yellow card for taking Asa down unfairly, the first ever yellow card! The resulting free kick was unsuccessful and Jordan D. was unlucky too when his shot went over the bar. It was therefore still 1-0 for Godmanchester at half time.

The second half saw much of the same, with both teams creating chances and narrowly missing or the defenders doing a great job in working the ball away from the danger zone. Chatteris were awarded a penalty when a Godmanchester defender went in too high with his leg inside the box and Asa duly scored the penalty with a blast at the goalkeeper. The referee clearly didn't like challenges with legs high up in the air, because a while later in midfield Jordan D. was given a yellow card apparently for kneeing a Godmanchester player in the chest, the first time ever for one of the Chatteris boys to be given one. Chatteris kept threatening upfront and after some great teamwork Alex thought he'd scored, but it had been flagged for offside and Godmanchester then went straight in the attack from the break, but the defender behind and Matthijs in front of the attacker put just enough pressure on the boy to put him off and he missed. Chatteris got another great chance following a free kick, but unfortunately Matthew just hit the ball over the bar as well, one of the many just missed chances from both sides.

As it was a cupmatch, 1-1 at the end of normal time meant 2x10 minutes extra time had to be played to get a result. The extra time was no different to the match itself, with Luke just missing following a big whack at the top corner and Godmanchester just missing again following a breakaway attack. It started to look like penalties to decide the winner, but Asa had other ideas. Throughout the match he had tried to get through, but he was constantly heavily marked and stopped, but he persevered and with people yelling at him to pass the ball to a fellow attacker, he finally managed to get a bit of space for himself after all. He took the shot and it finally brought the result the boys had been hoping for, 2-1 to Chatteris. The final minutes of the match went agonisingly slow for the Chatteris spectators, as Godmanchester desperately tried to score an equalizer, and Chatteris to score a third one to make the match safe, but both defences managed to hold the attackers off until the final whistle.

Well done to all the boys from both teams for making it such a gripping match for the spectators. Someone had to win and luckily for us it was Chatteris!
