Having eventually all arrived at the pitch in Little Wratting, the boys started brightly in what turned out to be a very entertaining match of football, with 2 teams battling it out right up to the end whistle.
At home Chatteris had only just beaten this team, so they knew they were up for a tough fight right from the word "go" and both teams created chances straight away, putting each other's defences under pressure. Neither team appeared to have their shooting boots on though, because either the ball was shot wide, over or straight at the keepers, leaving the players and spectators frustrated by the missed opportunities to score. Chatteris did eventually take the lead when a corner was slapped away by Withersfield's stand-in keeper and from the melee it was Jordan (Dover) who reacted first and shot the rebounding ball into the net to give Chatteris the lead. Play flowed up and down the pitch, with the midfielders and defenders working very hard, ably assisted by a for once very vocal Matthijs who came running out time and again to clear or grab the ball. Asa and Alex worked their socks off, but the Withersfield defence kept up with them very well and the few clear chances that they had were unfortunately not finished off with a goal. Mitchell had to come off when he started limping following a bad tackle and Luke also had to come off following a hospital visit earlier in the week and this took some off the bite out of the midfield/defence, although both Matthew and Jake S. worked very hard to fill in for them. It was 1-0 at half time.
The second half saw much of the same, with both teams getting rather desperate with some of their tackles and this led to warnings by the referee. He failed however to award Asa a penalty when he got tackled badly inside the area, much to the managers' dismay and they were doubly annoyed, because he did award Withersfield a penalty for a similar offence when one of the Chatteris defenders tripped a Withersfield attacker up in the area. This was indeed justified, but the same rules should apply to both teams. Anyway, the penalty was very well taken and it therefore was 1-1. Play flowed up and down the pitch the whole time, right up till the end when Asa had another chance and unfortunately shot it straight at the keeper again, as did a Withersfield attacker at the other side, so the final result was 1-1, with both teams knowing they could have scored more, if only......... |
