Having failed to secure second place last week when losing against Histon, the boys had it all to play for today. A draw or a win was needed, (as Withersfield and Histon, both finished playing already, were on the same amount of points, but had a better goal difference) but Saffron Walden was not going to roll over and give the boys the game. The boys knew it was going to be tough and so it proved to be!
Chatteris started the match with what can only be described as panic football, worried about the strong wind and the fast play of Saffron Walden. It was SW that scored first as well when the defence gave their attackers too much room and the attacker took a shot from about 10m off which banged straight into the net. Luckily the boys managed to equalize fairly quickly when a corner shot, taken by Jordan, curled round the inside post and the keeper, despite slapping at it, couldn't keep it out. A short while later , when the boys finally got some good passing play going, some great team work led to Alex L. scoring from close range to make it 2-1. The team then got a big blow when Cameron, one of the team's central defenders, had to come off the pitch altogether with a sudden groin injury. Saffron Walden equalized again shortly afterwards when a SW attacker was allowed to dribble through the defence and to shoot low from the side. With Matthijs not reacting quick enough and everyone else watching, the ball rolled along the goalline and into the net. Matthijs made up for it though when a short while later he managed to palm a long shot, that looked destined to go in, just over the bar to prevent SW going ahead. Chatteris took the lead again a few minutes before half time when some great passing play saw Jake K. cross the ball in from the side onto Alex L.'s head who headed it into the net, 3-2 to Chatteris.
The second half started much like the first half, with SW getting in there straight away, outplaying the defence and taking a low shot in the bottom left corner, 3-3. The boys took the lead back soon though, when a massive throw-in by Ivo (helped a bit by the wind) was quickly passed on by Asa to Jordan who was so determined to score that he fell over whilst kicking the ball, but it did go in!, 4-3. Jordan and Ivo were also involved in the fifth goal, when a corner kick taken by Jordan came straight on to Ivo's head who headed it strongly past the keeper to make it 5-3, the margin finally slightly more secure. Unfortunately for the boys, SW was not happy with that and they went on the rampage again, dribbling through the defence as if they weren't there, almost up to the goal before again shooting the ball low in the corner, 5-4.
That was too close for comfort again, but some sheer persistence saw Chatteris score again when, after some hard work from Jack R. and Jake K., the SW goalkeeper saved a shot with both legs up in the air, but didn't secure the ball and after some toing and froing Matthew L. evt. got the ball over the line, 6-4. SW didn't give up and kept pushing forward. It looked like they were going to succeed in scoring again, but Matthijs, having blocked the shot, reacted quick enough to grab the ball securely just before as SW attacker got to it. The boys were extremely relieved when the referee finally blew his whistle and they had won, achieving second place in the A division to which they had been promoted last year! Great work boys, well done! |
