Histon came to Chatteris this morning and overwhelmed the boys, especially in the first half, with their fast-paced play, making it at times look like a game of ping-pong.

The match started with chances for both teams to score, with Chatteris coming close a few times through Asa, but the follow-up wasn't happening, giving Histon the chance to work it away again. Histon nearly profited from a backheader from one of the Chatteris defenders, which Matthijs only just managed to palm over the top. It was Chatteris that scored first when an excellent pass from Alex over the Histon heads was picked up by Asa who pinged it into the top corner with a great first-time shot after about 13 minutes. Histon equalized less than 10 minutes later when the defence was surprised by a very fast-paced Histon attack which got ahead of them and the Histon attacker finished off with a great shot into the net. This gave Histon impetus and they attacked every ball with determination and were nearly rewarded when a rebound shot following a corner appeared to head into the top corner, but for a determined effort from Matthijs to palm it over. Histon did however score on the half hour mark when they managed to outwit the defence following a corner. Despite frantic efforts from the defenders in the melee in front of the goal, it was a Histon attacker who eventually shot the ball low into the corner of the net. To the horror of the Chatteris spectators Histon went even further ahead just before half-time when a fast run down the side of the pitch was finished off with a great shot on the hoof which appeared to bounce off the post, but unfortunately went the wrong way, into the net, making it 3-1 at half-time.

This was not the plan, as the boys needed a point today to finish runners-up in the league, so after the break renewed determination was straightaway rewarded when Jake K. strongly headed the ball into the net from a cornerkick to give the boys renewed hope, 2-3. That turned out to be it however, as the rest of the second half saw all the Chatteris efforts thwarted by the excellent Histon defence who didn't give the boys an inch and managed to stop Asa just before he got the chance to shoot from close range a few times. Chatteris got a few corners and came agonisingly close following a header, which unfortunately just went over via the crossbar. The Chatteris team played much stronger in the second half, but Histon still came close a couple of times, but for last ditch tackles and a few close shots straight at Matthijs, which he confidently caught first-time. All-in-all it was a shame Chatteris had let Histon get past them in the first half, as in the second half the teams were quite evenly matched.

This result means that the boys have dropped to fourth place, as Withersfield also won today, but the boys can still get to runners-up position in the very last match of the season, provided that they don't lose it! Go boys!!!!!
